So, you’re planning to buy a leaf blower for your garden. In this case, you should first answer this question: How big is your garden and how “tough to maintian in shape” (how many trees, bushes, etc you have there)?

If the answer is big and many, then you’ll have to go for a petrol powered leaf blower. I’ll explain later why. If the answers is not big but no that small either, you would still have to go for the petrol powered blower. Only if your garden is pretty small and you have just a lawn with a couple of trees, you could settle for an electric blower, if you want to save some bucks and get a cleaner machine.

As you might know (if you didn’t, you do now), petrol powered leaf blowers are the most powerful of all. They have a gas engine and are pretty big and heavy, so most of the times they are backpack devices. However, even though they are little bit dirty (because of the petrol) and noisy, are the best in cleaning large areas and provide great mobility.

Electric blowers on the other side are less powerful and require a permanent connection to a power line. But they are less poluting and also less noisy.

In terms of prices, the gas powered blowers are a little bit more expensive, around $100-$120 , while electric blowers run between $50 to $100. There are of course exceptions in both cases, but you would find a good pick in those price margins.

If you’d ask me, i would definitely go for a gas powered blower, no matter what. You should be carefull though, in some US states only some certain petrol blowers are allowed; you’ll have to ask details in the shops and read the legislation. Still, they are the best at their job and i simply cannot stand having a cable around me all the time.

So, if you’re looking for a garden leaf blower, you have two choices: petrol or electric devices. Just pick the one you think would suit your needs best.

Leaf blowers are a must have tool for every modern household that has a lawn and wants to keep it in proper shape during fall, when leafs are falling everyday. Some might not agree, but trust me, Doing the work the old way, with a rake, ain’t pleasant at all, i know i had my share of that.

There however different types of leaf blowers available on the market, some more powerful than others, some bigger, heavier and with more features. In here we’re going to talk about electric leaf blowers though and see why are they a good pick and why would anybody buy them.

First, i have to say electric blowers are medium powered. They can face standard debriefs, but i wouldn’t force them too much.

Then, they have an electric engine and need to be connected to a power line all the time. This damamges mobility a lot, but if your lawn is not that big and you have a long power cable, you should be just fine.

Since they are electric, these devices are non polluting and as quite as such a device can be (you’ll still hear them, but they won’t be as loud as the petrol powered tools). Also, they come with lots of nice features, including adjustable air cones, adjustable air speed and vacuum/mulcher functions. All these for a price that start from $30 for the low end versions and can get up to $80 for the better ones. Here you can find some of the best such electric leaf blowers on the market right now, according to reviews and features.

There would be many more to say about these devices, but i don’t want to bore you. As a conclusion, if you’re looking for a good priced leaf blower, pretty quiet and non polluting and you don’t need too much mobility or too much power, an electric blower is a good choice for you. In fact, most medium household owners pick such devices. They are mostly hand-held and light/compact enough to easily use them and then store them in you closet.

Since i know a couple of things about leaf blowers, i got a phone call from a friend who told me “I want a quiet leaf blower, what would you suggest”. This seems like a very simple question but in reality, is not. Let’s see why.

First of all, leaf blowers have mechanical engines, so you can’t say their quiet. You can at most ask for some quieter than others. In this case i would have to say that petrol powered leaf blowers are the noisiest ones (especially older versions), with regular electric powered blowers coming second and battery powered ones being the more quiet. However, the one quieter are the worst in terms of performances and power. Thus, if the gas blowers can be easily used for any kind of job, cordless ones are more like electric sweepers and can’t even battle with leafs on the lawn.

So, if you’d look for a good quiet leaf blower, you will have to go for a standard electric one, that comes with an attached cord . But you’ll lack mobility. or, as an alternative, there are the new quieter petrol powered devices for Stihl, but they are not as quiet as they claim they are and are really really expensive: if a standard electric blower costs around $70, a good Stihl would be around $200. And i for one don’t think that’s just worth it.

That’s why I’d recommend sticking with the electrical blowers. Here you can find our best picks of such devices.

Well, that’s a very good question, but one not so easy to answer. Like in most cases, the answer really depends on your needs and your plans to use the leaf blower you’ll buy.

First, you should know that hand-held devices are usually more difficult to carry around unless you’re a pretty solid guy. They weigh somewhere between 4 to 8 pounds, and although this might not seem that much, try using one for more than half an hour and you’ll see my point. Also, hand-held devices are usually less powerful and less mobile, because they are electric or battery powered, as they can’t really put the gas powered engine on such a device because of the weight.

A backpack leaf blower is however easier to carry around, although heavier. That’s because the weight isn’t supported by your arm but by the entire body, and 10-12 pounds is not that much for anyone to carry in his back. Most backpack blowers are gas powered, so they come with the power advantage.

So, choosing a backpack or a hand-held blower is just up to you. If you need something more powerful but bigger, go for the backpack. If you want just a tool to swap decks and driveways from time to time, a hand-held blower might be enough for you.

Here you can find our best pics on hand-held leaf blowers and also on bigger backpack ones .

When they entered the market just a couple of years ago, cordless battery powered leaf blowers did come with a couple of advantages that made them a little interesting to potential clients. However, they are still an young and immature technology that needs to advance some more before becoming a reliable alternative over the standard petrol powered blowers.

But let’s see why a cordless leaf blower is a good pick:

They are very very light, weiging somewhere around 3-4 pounds. Also, are compact and easy to store in the closet when not needed.

They are nearly noiseless. Thanks to their small low-powered electric engine they are even quieter than the standard electric leaf blowers on the market.

They are mobile, as they don’t require to be connected to a power line in order to work

And unfortunately that’s about it. Because these devices are low powered and come with a very poor battery life (around half an hour). They are meant to replace the noisy and polluting patrol powered blowers somewhere in the future, as they offer the same mobility as those do, but this won’t really happen in the next 5 to 8 years.

Anyway, a cordless leaf blower is still good enough if you need an electric battery powered sweeper around the house, mostly for indoor use, but not more.

Here are our picks of cordless leaf blowers , the best at the moment on the market.

As you might already know, there are quite a couple of types of leaf blowers on the market. The petrol leaf blowers are however the most popular by far and account for most of the sales on such devices, both in US (which I believe is the biggest market for them) and also worldwide.

This happens because petrol leaf blowers are the best in terms of performances and mobility, while coming with decent prices also. So, they have quite some advantages that should make you decide into buying one. Let’s see a couple of them:

They are the most powerful of all the leaf blowers. Thanks to their big petrol powered engines, these devices will allow you to blow out almost anything. No wonder they even make such tools for industrial use, that are like mini hurricanes.

They are portable. Since you just put the gas inside, turn them on and then just blow things, these devices are suitable for wider areas and for into the wilds use. Unlike the electric devices that are dependent of a power line or come with reduced battery life.

They have lots of features, like adjustable speed, vacuum/mower, adjustable and changeable air tubes, etc.

They come with good prices for their quality. A medium leaf blower from Toro, Black and Decker or Stihl costs around 100-120 bucks. The most powerful ones can easily pass $200, but those are not meant for households.

So, as you can see, petrol leaf blowers really pack a couple of advantages that could easily convince you to buy one of them. Of course, there are also a couple of disadvantages too, but more about those in a later post. For now, here are our picks of the best petrol powered leaf blowers on the market right now.

Backpack blowers are quite big and powerful, thus meant for industrial usage more. Here we have a Homelite ZR08580 gas powered blower, that can be a good choice for bigger household or more harsh conditions too.

The 22 cc engine generates a powerful airflow of 180 MPH, 400 CFM and comes with new fast starting and antichoking systems . Unfortunately it's not Carb compliant in some SU states (like California), but most gas powered blowers aren't . The device weights 12 pounds, but that's ok considering it's backheld.

This Homelite ZR08580 is factory restored and that's why it comes with a very nice price cut. You can get it online from Amazon for just $99.99 now, considering the retail price is way over $200. For more details and pics just press the link below.

As you all know, leaf blowers are usefull especially during the autumn months, October and November . That’s why in the industry, those months are considered lucrative for stores and since the demands increases, the prices rise too.

That’s why, if you want to buy such a device, you should try to get it earlier, during the summer months or early fall. Because that’s when you’ll get very good price cuts and sells offers, especially since many stores (both regular and online) try to get rid of last years stocks before the new products enter the market. And buying a last year model is not at all a problem especially in this field, where new models usually bring jsut better designs.

So, if you’re looking for a leaf blower this year, I’d recommend you’ll try to get it in the next weeks. We’ve gathered here on this site some of the best offers we’ve found online on such devices, and if you won’t hurry up, they might get out of stock pretty fast.

These handheld blowers also have different power systems, and in this post i’m going to show you a couple of the pros and cons of such devices.

Cordless handheld systems

they work with batteries

they are light and easy to use

the offer great mobility

they are usually not very powerful

they can only run for around 30-30 minutes between charges (and one charge usualy takes a couple of hours)

they are quite expensive

Electric handheld systems

they must be connected to a power line, thus you will always have a power cord attached, and this gives you reduced mobility

they are well priced, quiet and pollution free

they are powerful enough for small standard jobs

Gas hanheld blowers

they provide the best mobility

are the most powerful of the handheld leaf blowers

some of them might be too heavy to operate by hand, because of the bigger engines they have

they are a little more noisy and they pollute the environment (they burn gas)

they are usually quite expensive

That’s about it. According to your needs, you should choose the type of handheld blower from the ones above. I for one am a fan of the gas powered ones, but if you don’t have a big lawn or backyard, you could settle with an electric or even a cordless one.

When you’re using leaf blowers and vaccums, i recommend you to use protection equipment.

I’m going to enumerate in the following lines the things you should use:

goggles – protect your eyes from dust and debriefs (example)

noise canceling earmuffs – protect your ear from noise (example)

gloves - protect your hands (example)

From the ones above, goggles are a must for whatever type of blower you use. Ear protecting might be necesary only when you use gas powered blowers, because electric blowers are nowadays extremely quiet so they should not bother you. As fot the gloves, when working in the garden you might have to use your hands and grab things, thus they are requiered. If you just blow away the leaves on the deck, you could live without.

You might think I’m paranoiac or something, but I’ve seen quite a lot of nasty accidents happening exactly because people don’t use such protection equipment. So, better paranoiac then on the emergency room, ay?
